Health Advice & Medical Treatment for Travellers
Do you know that?
1. The new EHIC has replaced the previous Form E111?
2. The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) now replaces the previous form E111 and is available on-line from the Department of Health at: www.dh.gov.uk/travellers
3. In The EU and some other European countries, you can get healthcare at reduced cost or in some cases, free.
If you are considering travelling within Europe or Switzerland, please read the following information. Application details from the Department of Health website are also set out below:
Application For European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)
If you are a UK resident, you are entitled to medical treatment that becomes necessary, at reduced cost or sometimes free, when temporarily visiting a
European Union (EU) country, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland. Only treatment provided under the state scheme is covered. However, to obtain treatment you will need to take a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) with you. Please note: Not all UK residents are covered in Denmark, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland. Click on the 'Health Advice for Travellers' link below, if you are unsure whether you are covered.
Applying For A Card
You can apply for an EHIC, free of charge, on this website by clicking on the 'Apply Now' link below. Alternatively, you can apply:
• by calling 0845 606 2030; or
• by picking up an application form from the Post Office.
Only one application by either: post / internet or telephone is necessary. If you have made any prior applications and are yet to receive a card, please call our enquiry line on 0845 605 0707
Before applying for an EHIC it is advisable to have read the information at 'Health Advice For Travellers'
In order to apply ensure you have the NHS or National Insurance Number, Surname/Family Name, Forenames and Date of Birth of each applicant.

A comprehensive NHS booklet called Health Advice for Travellers is available Free of Charge from Post Offices in the UK and gives lots of accurate information in case you fall ill or have an accident while you are on holiday. Items also covered include:

• What it covers
• Who is eligible, and
• How to apply
Worldwide Travel:
When travelling to other destinations such as the US and North America, Canada, the Middle & Far East, Asia and Africa, you are advised to have Private Health/Medical Insurance.
If you think you may already be covered in this way, please check with the Insurance Provider before planning your journey and then always take a copy of the Insurance with you on holiday.
