Lying almost furthest from Athens is Santorini, one of the premier Cyclades Islands in the Aegean Sea. Santorini is breathtakingly beautiful, with its white washed houses and incredible landscape, it enjoys the most spectacular sunsets of the Aegean.

 

Over 3,500 years ago, the island was destroyed by a massive volcanic eruption that wiped out the entire population, culminating in the end of the Minoan Civilisation. But Santorini is now an island of outstanding beauty - where rugged landscapes meet coastal crags, falling gently into the rich blue waters of the Aegean. Visitors flock here annually to seek a relaxing break and enjoy stays in Santorini holiday villas and apartments that are offered for rent.

 

Santorini is a sophisticated and yet completely unique island. It’s long been renowned for fertile soils and a scattering of vineyards, in sharp contrast to its spectacular coastline. The island is also famous for its production of Nichter wine. The grapes are generally pressed at night when the air is cool, slowing down fermentation which then gives the wine its natural soft flavour.

 

Fira is the island’s capital and from a distance, the village appears like snow on a mountain ridge, perched on the edge of a cliff. There are whitewashed houses along the coastal walks, and you can wander through the white cobbled streets to enjoy the old world charm that blends comfortably with present day tourism. Oia is the prettiest village on Santorini, where pristine white houses, often shaded by bougainvilleas and jasmine, cling to the cliff face.

 

Santorini’s beaches are mostly black or deep red due to the volcanic rock, and by midday during the summer tourists retreat to the shade of the beach-front bars and tavernas. Exploring the island on foot can be very rewarding.

 

With warm summer sunshine from early March and then in October, you’ll find Santorini is a beautiful small island to enjoy, away from the peak season.
